American Flamingos are a cultural icon of Florida, yet their status in Florida has been controversial for nearly a century. This presentation by Tony Pernas of the Florida Flamingo Working Group (FFWG) will shed light on the history of Florida Flamingos and efforts by FFWG to promote conservation and awareness.

Tony Pernas is a council person for the city of Everglades City. Previously Tony had a long career with the National Park Service. Prior to his retirement he was the Chief of Resource Management for Big Cypress National Preserve, from 2019 to 2021. In this position he was responsible for managing all park science and resource management operations which includes wildlife and vegetation management, cultural resources, geological and physical resources, environmental compliance, science communications, and research programs.

Tony served as the President of the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council and the National Association of Exotic Pest Plant Councils from 1998-2000. He was the Co-Chair of the Everglades Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (ECISMA) from 2006-2022.

Currently, he serves as the President of the Friends of Everglades CISMA (Cooperative Invasive Species Management Areas), a non-profit, which raises funds to assist Everglades CISMA. Tony has been a member of the Florida Native Plant Society since 1987 and is a founding member of the Florida Flamingo Working Group. https://www.facebook.com/FlaFlamingos/

The Natives of Dade was incorporated in 1986 by a group of local history enthusiasts born in Dade County. The groups merged on July 8, 2002.
