Summer Break - No Meeting In July |
As usual, we take a break from regular monthly meetings in the summertime -- usually in July and August -- while many members are traveling.
Enjoy your time off and set your calendar for our next group meeting.
Please Note: There is no meeting scheduled for the month of July, however we have a special event planned for August 1. See details below. |
Save The Date Our August Meeting will be held at the Coral Gables Museum on Sunday, August 1 at 2pm |
Let's gather together at the museum for another meeting for members of the Miami Pioneers and Natives of Dade, along with friends. |
Invite a friend who enjoys local history to join our meeting at the museum. It's always fun to share your appreciation for local history with a friend, family member or neighbor. |

Sunday, August 1 at 2pmCesar Becerra – Miami’s 125th Anniversary | |
We all know the story of the orange blossoms and the freeze. You can’t miss it. Its legendary. Though in November of 1920 at the Miami Woman’s Club, Henry Flagler’s right hand man James Ingraham told a more nuanced story.
In the making since Miami’s Centennial 25 years ago — historian Cesar A. Becerra is ready to debut his book on the question of co-mother status of Mary Bulmer Brickell. He has designed a dual platform of a book entitled Orange Blossom 2.0 with 125 commemorative limited edition crates — containing 30 items of Miami memorabilia — in celebration of Miami’s 125th anniversary on July 28th, 2021.
Join Cesar, along with your fellow MP/NOD members and friends on this weekend of Miami's 125th anniversary -- starting at the Coral Gables Museum at 2pm.
Attend the Miami Pioneers and Natives of Dade August meeting at the museum.

 | Virgie Lee Shaw Celebration Of Life - July 10 at 3pm |
Virgie Lee Shaw's daughter Sharyllyn wants all the members of MP/NOD and friends to know that she and her brother are planning a Celebration Of Life for July 10 at 3pm at the Central Christian Church, 222 Menores Ave.
An active member of the Miami Pioneers and Natives of Dade -- Virgie Lee was a beloved and respected English and Drama teacher at Miami High. Her husband was Pastor Emeritus of Central Christian Church. Born on July 9, 1922, she passed away last July 23 just after her 98th birthday, but was not able to have a public service due to the pandemic.
We look forward to attending the service in celebration of a life well lived. For more information, please contact Sharyllyn at 305-582-6231. |

The Miami Pioneers is Dade County’s legacy historical organization, originally founded in 1936 by prominent settlers and business leaders who arrived in Miami in the pioneer era before the year 1900. The Natives of Dade was incorporated in 1986 by a group of local history enthusiasts born in Dade County. The groups merged on July 8, 2002. |
