Cesar Becerra – Miami’s 125th Anniversary

Cesar Becerra - Miami's 125th Anniversary
We all know the story of the orange blossoms and the freeze. You can’t miss it. Its legendary. Though in November of 1920 at the Miami Woman’s Club, Henry Flagler’s right hand man James Ingraham told a more nuanced story.

In the making since Miami’s Centennial 25 years ago — historian Cesar A. Becerra is ready to debut his book on the question of co-mother status of Mary Bulmer Brickell. He has designed a dual platform of a book entitled Orange Blossom 2.0 with 125 commemorative limited edition crates — containing 30 items of Miami memorabilia — in celebration of Miami’s 125th anniversary on July 28th, 2021.

Join Cesar, along with your fellow MP/NOD members and friends on this weekend of Miami's 125th anniversary -- starting at the Coral Gables Museum at 2pm.

Attend the Miami Pioneers and Natives of Dade August meeting at the museum.

In Memoriam

Joseph H. Fitzgerald, MD
March 28, 1931 - June 21, 2021

Joe was a long time member and former treasurer of the Miami Pioneers and Natives of Dade historical society, an avid local history enthusiasts and a friend to all who knew him.
As a young man, his genial, focused, and hard-working nature was evident: president of this 8th-grade class, Harvard Book Award recipient, student council, and voted "Most Likely to Succeed" at Miami Senior High. Joe continued his education at Harvard University where he developed a love of history while following his father Willard's path into the practice of Urology. Joe met and married his wife, Monica, and started a loving family of three children -- Karl, Lars and Anna -- in Coconut Grove, around the corner from his childhood home where his mother Mary still lived.

As a member of the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club, he became an avid sailor and out island cruiser over many summers with his family. His fascination and enthusiasm for antique maps lead to the establishment of the world-famous Miami Map Fair in 1994.

Dr. Fitzgerald is survived and loved by Monica, his wife of 54 years, his children Karl, Lars and Anna, their spouses, and four grandchildren.

A service was held on Friday, June 25 at Caballero Rivero Little Havana Funeral Home.

The Miami Pioneers is Dade County’s legacy historical organization, originally founded in 1936 by prominent settlers and business leaders who arrived in Miami in the pioneer era before the year 1900. The Natives of Dade was incorporated in 1986 by a group of local history enthusiasts born in Dade County. The groups merged on July 8, 2002.
