Fred Hand - Miami's First Photo Studio

The Miami Pioneers and Natives of Dade are pleased to welcome Stephanie Garcia and Margarita Mirabal from the Miami-Dade Public Library's digital collections and historic archives, with a program on photographer Fred Hand, proprietor of Miami's first photo studio.

Fred Hand’s Pioneer Miami Photo Studio
A number of historic negatives and prints, as well as significant personal effects, were donated to the Miami Pioneers historical society by Fred Hand's great-granddaughter Martha Stevenson to be archived in perpetuity. The collection is now in the hands of Miami-Dade Library's Florida Collection.

This treasure trove of early Miami memories includes portraits of prominent pioneer settlers and their families, as well as Fred's family and descendants.

Digitizing the old negatives and prints takes hundreds of hours, but now the library staff are ready to share many of these images with the Miami Pioneer members and friends.
We're also pleased to welcome Fred Hand's great-granddaughter Martha Stevenson to the gathering, to offer additional insight into the Fred Hand family history.

The Natives of Dade was incorporated in 1986 by a group of local history enthusiasts born in Dade County. The groups merged on July 8, 2002.
