Saturday, September 9 at 2pmMiami Pioneers and Natives of Dade Field TripHistoric Palm Lodge and Historic Town Hall Museum in Homestead | | Get ready for a field trip -- back in time -- as we visit two iconic and legendary locations in old South Dade County. Meet at the first location, arriving at 2pm. | The Miami Pioneers and Natives of Dade historical society invites one and all to join us for a very special visit to the Palm Lodge and the Town Hall Museum in historic Homestead.
First, we meet at the historic Palm Lodge at 2pm for a delightful tour of this fully restored historical gem and learn all about Colonel Henry Wallace Johnston from Kentucky and his fruitful enterprise, with a taste of what life was like in this pioneer wilderness a century ago. The address is 17390 SW 296th Street, Homestead FL 33030.
Then, we journey to the fascinating Homestead Town Hall Museum, full of wonderful artifacts and exhibits from the last century, artfully organized and presented in the original location of town hall, in the heart of historic old Homestead. The address is 41 North Krome Ave, Homestead, FL 33030, across from the historic Seminole Theatre.

Mark your calendars now to be with us on Saturday, September 9.

 | Ruth Miriam Wolkowsky Greenfield (November 17, 1923 – July 27, 2023) |
A long-time member of the Miami Pioneers and Natives of Dade historical Society, Ruth was an American concert pianist and teacher who, through music, broke racial barriers and brought together black and white students, taught by black and white teachers. This pioneering color-blind approach, considered scandalous at the time, was a breath of fresh air in the then-segregated South Florida society. |
She founded, in 1951, the Fine Arts Conservatory, one of the first fully integrated schools for music, art and dance in the South. Greenfield continued to teach for 32 years at what is today Miami Dade College, Florida's first integrated college. She founded Miami-Dade Community College's Lunchtime Lively Arts Series in the late 1970s.
On November 18, 2022, a day after she celebrated her 99th birthday, the city of Miami co-designated the street where Greenfield lived as Ruth Greenfield Way. In December, 2022 Ruth Greenfield received the FSMTA Breaking Barriers Award. She died in Miami on July 27, 2023, at the age of 99. |
