| | Hello MPNOD member, Here is a fresh update from the Miami Pioneers and Natives of Dade Historical Society website: mpnod.org • Facebook: facebook.com/MPNOD/ |
| | Sunday, June 2 at 2pm - Coral Gables Museum
M. Patrick Griffith - Montgomery Botanical | | Our guest speaker is Patrick Griffith, Executive Director of the Montgomery Botanic Center, offering a history of this world-renowned plant research facility and a historical landmark in South Florida.
Montgomery Botanical Center is the living legacy of Robert and Nell Montgomery, widely known as the founders of Fairchild Tropical Garden (now Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden). Housed on their 120-acre Coral Gables estate, it includes the largest and finest private collections of palms and cycads in the world. As a living tribute to her late husband, in 1959 Nell created The Montgomery Foundation, Inc. -- later renamed the Montgomery Botanical Center (MBC) -- as an independent, nonprofit institution devoted to advancing the science of tropical botany.
The members of the Miami Pioneers and Natives of Dade historical society invite the public -- especially those with an interest in local history -- to attend the monthly meeting on the first Sunday of the month at 2pm at the Coral Gables Museum, 285 Aragon Avenue in Coral Gables.
Each meeting features a presentation by a guest speaker, followed by social time and refreshments. The public is invited.
| |
| Summer Break Our Miami Pioneers and Natives of Dade Historical Society takes a hiatus for the summer months of July and August. Mark your calendar for the second Sunday in September -- after the labor Day holiday weekend -- September 8. |

 | As always, let's share the love of local history with family and friends. Bring a friend, a neighbor or a family member to the next meeting at the museum. |
| | | After our meetings, our group traditionally enjoys refreshments and social time. If you’re able to contribute to this effort, please bring some small snacks, fresh fruit, cookies, brownies, chips and dip, or a similar item that you’d like to share with your friends. |
| | | Corresponding Secretary Mary Pyle leads the telephone committee, along with Pat Ware and Janet English. Please share your thoughts and feedback with them when they call. If you have any questions about the telephone committee, contact Mary at 305-264-2033 or email: mary.pyle@att.net |
