Miami Military Museum – This Old Headquarters
Celebrating the 79th anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day, Anthony Atwood presents a program on the history of the Military in South Florida on Sunday, December 6th at 2pm, via zoom online interactive video. Ten Floridians, including two from Homestead, are still on USS Arizona. We remember them and discuss the Pearl Harbor Remembrance hosted annually at the museum.
The historic Miami Military Museum and Memorial building was built by the Navy in 1942 to fight the Nazi U-boat attacks on Florida using military blimps. Then it was CIA as headquarters for anti-Castro Cuban exile Freedom Fighters. Then it was our Army Reserve Center; and lastly the Marine Corps Reserve Center until 1992. Fifty years of our local military heritage. But then it was allowed to deteriorate to the point of being Condemned.
Saving the Building
Saving it has taken ten years, including relocating it — the largest building moved in Florida in one piece. Now it is Listed on the National Register of Historic Places — with a grade of “National Significance” because of its unique lineage, and recently was recognized by the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation with its annual award.
Our Presenter – Anthony D. Atwood
Anthony D. Atwood is a native Miamian, a retired Navy Officer and holds the Ph.D. in History from FIU. He has taught extensively as an adjunct professor and is the Resident Military Historian for the FIU National Security program. He is the founder of the Miami Military Museum and Memorial. Located on the grounds of Zoo Miami, it is the restoration of the original Navy blimp base headquarters building. Dr. Atwood raised the funds to save the building with a painstaking 10-year restoration, including relocating the building to adjacent the Gold Coast Railroad Museum where the public can access it. It is the largest structure ever moved in Florida in one piece. The building is now on the National Register of Historic Places, has won awards by the Florida Trust, and is preparing for a Grand Opening on Sunday June 6, 2021, the anniversary of D-Day. https://www.miamimilitarymuseum.org
