Arch Creek: Preserving And Sharing The Legacy Of Places That Matter

The Miami Pioneers and Natives of Dade are pleased to welcome Susan Weiss and Ximena Valdivia for a program on the history of preserving one of South Florida’s most iconic natural wonders.

The presentation will provide an overview of Arch Creek Trust and its work in preserving the rich natural history and significant archeology of Arch Creek in North Miami, from its earliest native inhabitants to the present.

Arch Creek - Meet At The Bridge

The presentation also highlights the FIU-Arch Creek Trust Digitization Project to preserve the organization’s archival records reflecting the expansive history and prehistory of the site. Through this project Trust volunteers — with support from FIU faculty and staff — scanned historical papers, photographs and other materials for inclusion in FIU’s dPanther Repository. They also contributed to metadata creation to support access to the historical materials in perpetuity.

Let’s meet at the Pinecrest Library on Saturday, February 10 at 2pm for this fine presentation.

Susan Weiss worked at Florida International University in North Miami for 35 years. During that time, she was a reference librarian providing general assistance to all library patrons. She received a Master in Public Administration from FIU in 1985. Eventually, Susan became interested in local Miami and South Florida and began collecting and organizing local documents for the FIU North Miami library. In 1996 her book “Miami Bibliography” was published by the Historical Association of Southern Florida now HistoryMiami. Susan has been involved with the Arch Creek Trust for forty years.

Ximena Valdivia serves as a Cataloging and Metadata Librarian at Florida International University (FIU). Ximena holds a BS in Library Science from the Metropolitan University of Technology in Santiago, Chile, a Master of Arts in Library and Information Science from the University of South Florida and is currently studying for her Masters of Arts in Latin American and Caribbean Studies at FIU. In her position, she is responsible for providing original and complex copy cataloging, creating metadata to maximize discovery of digital content, and providing authority control for library materials and collections with a focus on Special Collections. She has previously worked with Barry University and the University of Miami in a number of capacities on significant historical collections.
